If you are a full-time or part-time employee, you may take up to 3 days’ paid compassionate leave (also known as bereavement leave) per occasion when a family or household member contracts or
develops a life-threatening illness or injury or in circumstances of the death of a family or household member. This includes where you or your spouse/de facto partner experiences the loss of a child as a result of miscarriage or stillbirth, parents regardless of gender.
Immediate family
An employee’s immediate family includes their:
- spouse or former spouse
- de facto partner or former de facto partner
- child
- parent
- grandparent
- grandchild
- sibling.
Immediate family also includes:
- the immediate family of the employee's spouse or de facto partner (or former spouse or de facto partner)
- step-relations (for example, step-parent and step-child)
- adoptive relations.
Casual employees are entitled to 2 days’ unpaid compassionate/bereavement leave. For more information on Leave, please refer to the Leave Policy found on the Policies page of the SBS Intranet.
