You may apply to take long service leave as soon as you have completed 10 years continuous service. SBS may grant a period of long service leave for a period of up to your long service leave credit.
If you plan to take long service leave you should try to give your Manager as much notice as possible. At least 6 weeks’ notice is suggested if you want to take a lengthy period of leave. This will assist your Manager to plan for your absence. The minimum period for which long Service leave will be approved is 7 full days. However, SBS’s preference is for employees to take an extended break after a long period of service.
Long service leave can be granted in combination with annual leave, as long as a period of annual leave does not break the long service leave period.
You may choose to take a period of long service leave at half pay and the period may be up to twice your long service leave credit.
Weekends and public holidays form part of the period of long service leave. However, the period of leave would not start or end on a weekend or public holiday. Permanent shift workers should start and finish long service leave on a day they are rostered to work.
